Week 5: Movies

My favourite movie in 2009-2010 is the movie Inception which I watched it in the theatre. The reason behind the story is so simple; yet the twists and turns in the movie are fascinating. Before watching the film, I thought it could be a flop with a lot of special effects and CGs; but it turns out a stunning spectacular which I decided to buy the blu-ray version as a collection.

My all-time favourite film is a British film titled Cashback. I first watched it through a DVD from my friend. The story of the movie might seem to be a little bit silly, but it is something that everyone has been through. And also the way the director Sean Ellis shot the movie is another reason that attracts me.

Week 3: Books

The first of the three most influential books to me is The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. It was absolutely a long read; however, it was interesting and it helped me to understand the medieval European culture. The second one is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. Most of the time books about the 911 attack are written as non-fiction book; but the author used the incident and created a story of a child’s adventure that I found very moving and also very realistic. The final one is Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq by Stephen Kinzer. The reason that the book is influential to me is that it shows how the American created turmoil, from time to time, in the name of spreading democracy; while the real reasons behind were resources and wealth.

Week 2: Media Impact

A lot of purchases we make nowadays are based on ads that we have read from a magazine, have watched on the television, or have skimmed from a website. However, how influential are these advertisements? Have we really bought products because of ads that we have seen? To answer these two questions, I propose a thorough research studying the relationship between the consumers’ behavior and the advertisements in order to have a better understanding of the influence of mass media. Since advertisements can be seen everywhere and they are full of different kinds of products; I suggest that the research should concentrate on a specific type of media. For this study, I think that television will be a good object to observe because television these days contains a lot of advertisement and people are spending a lot of time watching TV. First, I will do a content analysis on some of the biggest channels like Fox; and conduct a list of types of ads are shown on TV. Then I will have a random sampling group consists of 25 male and 25 female. In this experiment, I will be looking for the type of advertisement that each individual is interested in. A survey will also be done with the same group; the purpose of this survey is to find out the actual amount that each person has spent on something that are totally based on advertisement that they have seen. If my hypothesis is correct, the result will show most of these 50 individuals’ buying behavior is influenced by the TV ads; and I believe that consumers nowadays are heavily influenced by advertisement as the mass media nowadays are very influential.
